Bob’s Position on Student Housing

The issue of student housing came up at the recent UVM-SGA mayoral forum. I am not in favor of the proposal requiring at least 75% of all students to live in dormitories on campus all 4 years. However, I do believe that we need to find a better solution to the issue of student housing. This could include identifying a finite number of students living in the community and creating apartment options for students on the UVM campus.

I agree that students should have housing options that allow them to live independently as adults. I know that students can live responsibly without RA supervision. This is not a concern. However, I am concerned that students will not be able to find affordable housing in Burlington after they graduate. We want you to remain in Burlington. The City benefits from your energy, creativity and commitment.

The City and UVM have a good relationship and a mutual recognition of the need to work together on issues facing the community. We need additional housing options for students to help make housing more affordable for everyone.
